TL;DR
- It appears that Google Now Playing is working on expanding the song-ID feature to a more extensive Audio Memory feature.
- In addition to recognizing songs both on and off your device, Audio Memory also lets you track conversations.
Pixel users already know how convenient it is to always have their phone ready to help you name that catchy tune you can’t quite place. Google just gave a big upgrade with the release of the song-ID tool Now playing as its own custom application, and now we’re already checking out what could be the next stage of evolution for this powerful feature.

We look at the recent times Android system intelligence Here we get our first look at something called “Audio Memory”. And while it sounds like 99% Now Playing, there’s one brief reference that hints at wider functionality.
Here’s a look at some lines of text we found related to Audio Memory, codenamed “Blueflax”:
Code
"Music recognition automatically identifies music using a song database on your device. If a song isn't recognized, a short digital fingerprint may be sent to Google to securely search the cloud. Background conversations and audio are never sent to Google.
Manually identifying a song uses a cloud search to provide better recognition and album artwork. Now Playing uses privacy-preserving analytics.
You can control which apps Audio Memory can use to identify music."

Now there’s a direct reference to Playing, but note the additional message for new users: “Track what you’re hearing throughout the day from the music around you. to your important conversations.” The solutions we currently have are related to identifying songs, while this sounds more like it AI note taking software.
We were even able to show a few early screenshots – but unfortunately without detailed information about Audio Memory’s chat tracking component:
So we have the ability to identify ambient music, songs played through other apps on your phone, and this new tool has the ability to monitor important conversations. To say we still have a lot of questions about how this will all work would be an understatement. A bigger effort seems to be repositioning Google’s song ID technology as this Audio Memory backend.
Could the fact that we only get one brief reference to conversation tracking be a sign that this is more of a future goal for Google and not an original component of Audio Memory? At this point, it’s probably too early to start speculating there, and right now we’re mostly just looking forward to seeing these changes. For now, we just have to keep checking for signs of progress.
