If accurate, the move would be a step beyond Samsung’s current smartwatch connectivity options. Galaxy Watches with cellular support are currently 4G/LTE-based, and the first Galaxy Watch Ultra was launched in an LTE-only variant rather than offering a Bluetooth-only model. Adding 5G might not change how you use a smartwatch every day, but it could allow for faster data transfer and improve efficiency when sending or receiving data outside of Wi-Fi range.

Samsung will also follow a path Apple already bought it last year. Apple has added 5G connectivity to its line of smartwatches in 2025, including the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch SE 3. Regardless of whether you feel that 5G connectivity is a must in the next wearable device, Samsung probably didn’t want to be seen falling behind its main rivals.

Previous reports suggest that Samsung is developing the Galaxy Watch Ultra alongside the Galaxy Watch 9 with both expected to be launched in July this year. Meanwhile, it’s likely to place the new watch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. Internally, the device is said to be under the name Watch 9 Ultra, although the final marketing name has not been confirmed.
