Ninja Theory, known for the Hellblade series, In 2020, it announced a mystery horror game called Project Maradescribed as “a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror”. The project sounded ambitious, but now it turns out that the development has been canceled.
In a statement from Ninja Theory, discussing the newly announced Senua, the studio said:
“I suspect that the whole team is working on this game, so some people might ask what happened to Project Mara (the previously announced horror title) – I decided not to work on it anymore. These decisions are never easy, but I made it to take advantage of the opportunity to have all the talent and expertise in the studio, all 85 creators, working together to realize the potential of what Senua could be.“
Given how little we’ve seen of Project Mara, it’s hard to say much. Beyond the reveal trailer for the new game, Senua, we still don’t know much about the game, though Xbox Wire has shared some additional details on what players can expect.
Although Project Mara has gone, it uses this extra development power to make Ninja Theory Senua is a more ambitious project than previous Hellblade games.
According to Xbox WireSenua is positioned as a complete action-adventure game, and Ninja Theory calls it “A bold new step for SenuaIt expands on the combat, exploration, and puzzle solving while maintaining the intimate storytelling that the series is known for.
It was also revealed that Senua will feature tactical combat with multiple weapons, dual wielding, stealth options, special abilities, and boss battles. The world itself will be roughly twice the size of Hellblade II, set up as a large interconnected map that rewards exploration without becoming a completely open-world game.
