AI startup Thinking Machines Lab, founded last year by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, announced on Monday. interaction modelsit essentially sounds like an AI that can get in your way.
Every AI model you currently use works the same way. You talk, he listens. He answers, you listen. Thinking Machines tries to change that by building a model that processes your input and generates a response at the same time, so it’s more like a phone call than a text chain.
The technical term for this is “full duplex,” and the company claims that the TML-Interaction-Small model responds in 0.40 seconds, which is roughly the speed of a natural human conversation and significantly faster than comparable models from OpenAI and Google.
Again, this is a review of research, not a product. The company is yet to disclose this to the public. A “limited research review” will follow in the next few months, with a wider release set for later this year.
But what to do with it? We are not sure. The criteria it’s impressive, and the core idea—that interactivity is native to the model, not hardwired—is definitely interesting. Whether the real-world experience lives up to the technical claims is something we won’t know until people can actually use it.
