If you logged in today from work or school hoping for a chill evening playing Xbox, you may have been greeted with a series of annoying bugs.
Indeed The Xbox network (don’t call it Xbox Live) was down for 15~ hours today, services for many are still intermittent for some. For the most part, it appears to be recovering as of writing.
It’s not a pretty look, given how focused PlayStation has been on its digital ownership rights over the past few weeks. Sony’s decision to announce that the delivery of games on physical discs is sunset players are questioning what they will lose, and today’s major Xbox outage is a big sign.
The Xbox Network (not Xbox Live) generally has good uptime. It suffered An outage during Halo Campaign Evolved’s launch window last weekbut I can’t remember the last time there was a big break before that. Again, this is of little comfort to them actively paying for a service they did not receive, Especially considering how much free time most of us have.
Xbox’s shiny new CTO, Scott Van Vilet, agrees, and posted a lengthy article on X (Twitter) to explain what’s wrong and what Xbox plans to do better.
Earlier today, many players began experiencing problems logging in, listing game libraries, and playing games. The team worked hard throughout the day to resolve the issue and we restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nevertheless, this is an unacceptable situation and… https://t.co/3y9TjxzKlsJuly 28, 2026
“This is an unacceptable situation, and we need to do better to support you. In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing more from me about our services, our platform, and the work we’re doing to make XBOX even better. And that starts with some transparency about this incident.”
Van Vilet explained that Microsoft’s licensing library system suffered a failure yesterday, which had a consequential impact on dependencies outside of the core Microsoft Store. Microsoft engineers prioritized Xbox traffic to other parts of Microsoft’s cloud array while repairing faulty licensing systems.
Van Vilet explained that Xbox plans to launch a “full investigation after the incident” with the goal of preventing this from happening again.
“We’re doing a full post-event investigation. I’m interested in a number of root causes and more real questions: why a service failure could take so long, why it took so long to restore, and what we’re changing so that a failure doesn’t ruin your night again.”
Van Vilet closed by thanking Xbox fans for their patience and promising to “do better.”
The downsides of digital are getting a lot of attention right now
Microsoft hasn’t responded to PlayStation’s decision to kill disc-based games, but there’s little reason to think Xbox won’t follow suit. I heard that the previous Xbox management also decided a while ago that the Xbox Helix would not have a disc drive, although there was an absolutely massive backlash Sonys disclosure may prompt them to reconsider.
Microsoft is expected to announce Software with digital rights from disc codenamed Positronthis will allow users to convert their disc-based games into permanent digital licenses on their Xbox account.
It’s a great idea if it works as rumored and allows physical gamers to enjoy digital rights benefits like Xbox. Cloud GameProtect your licenses for Xbox Anywhere Play and online.
However, the downsides are obvious. With digital gaming being phased out, digital rights over content are increasingly being questioned. Currently, most markets have no legal mechanism for, for example, bequeathing digital goods to loved ones after death. There is no mechanism for selling digital games on the second-hand market. Sharing digital games is also impossible on most platforms, although Steam and Nintendo have introduced some innovations in this area – Xbox and PlayStation have yet to follow suit. Many Xbox and PlayStation games won’t work offline even if you have a disc, as many modern games these days don’t actually run from disc or have weird forced (and often unnecessary) always-online systems.
The blurb, albeit relatively short and boring, once again focuses on some of these digital rights issues. It will be interesting to see how Xbox handles the situation when they reveal Positron.
