Years ago, you could go almost anywhere outside of town and have no cell coverage. Cellular networks have improved significantly since then, but there are still places that do not have adequate cellular coverage for one reason or another. Thankfully, T-Mobile has the perfect solution to this problem: satellite connectivity.
While some phones have had satellite connectivity for decades, modern smartphones only recently got this feature apple introduced on the iPhone a few years ago. Since then, Google has adopted it on its Pixel phones, and T-Mobile has taken things further by expanding coverage to phones it never advertised as having satellite connectivity in the first place.
T-Mobile calls this program T-Satellite, and it’s available to both T-Mobile customers and subscribers of other phone carriers. The app uses StarLink satellites to connect to T-Mobile’s network anywhere you can see the sky, significantly expanding coverage compared to traditional cellular networks.
What is T-Satellite?
T-Satellite is the name of T-Mobile’s satellite service that operates using the newer StarLink satellites. These satellites feature a new type of cellular radio that can transmit in the 1980-2000 MHz spectrum using T-Mobile’s FCC-approved LTE Band 25. This means that phones that support T-Satellite can automatically switch between T-Mobile’s Terrestrial Network and StarLink.
That’s why T-Mobile says its T-Satellite service can be used for 500,000 miles, which is not covered by any other cell phone service in the United States. T-Satellite is also available internationally in select countries including Canada, New Zealand and Japan.
For example, other satellite-based connections to phones like the iPhone require you to point the phone at the satellite to establish a connection. It also means that communication is limited to basic text messages and is reserved for emergencies only. T-Satellite doesn’t require you to hold your phone in a certain way because it connects over the LTE channel, making the experience seamless.
You can enjoy full voice and data services through a certain set of approved applications. Thankfully, this includes common apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, AllTrails, AccuWeather, X (formerly Twitter) and even MMS messaging, so you can send and receive pictures in addition to text messages. T-Mobile keeps it Here’s a full list of eligible programs.
Voice calls are made through WhatsApp, while users can dial 911 from anywhere. You’ll know you’re using T-Satellite service when the connection icon on your phone changes to show “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink” in the status bar. Compatible applications may also display a banner indicating that you are connected via satellite.
T-Satellite isn’t as fast as T-Mobile’s regular 5G Network, but since it’s available almost everywhere, it’s a good trade-off. The company launched this service in 2025 and things have only gotten better since then, making it a must-have in the modern era.
Is my phone compatible with T-Satellite?
T-Mobile T-Satellite is available for T-Mobile and non-T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile customers on any of the company’s Experience Beyond plans can use the service at no additional cost or add-ons. Those using other carriers (Verizon, AT&T, etc.) can Register for T-Satellite service separately for $10 per month via the second SIM on your phone.
T-Mobile says most phones sold in the last four years are compatible with T-Satellite, but I found this not to be the case. T-Mobile likely means that most phones sold in its distribution channels and stores are compatible, but a significant number of smartphones manufactured in the last four years do not work with T-Satellite service.
I have tested phones from several major brands no Sold by T-Mobile and found none compatible. This includes phones from brands like OnePlus, Oppo, Nothing, Honor, RealMe and Xiaomi. Phones officially sold through Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Apple iPhone, Motorola and even T-Mobile channels TCL NXTPAPER 70 Proall work great with service. Thank you, T-Mobile does great deals on a regular basis so you can get a suitable phone.
Go here to find out if your phone is eligible The official T-Mobile compatibility tool and enter your IMEI and EID numbers to verify. To find these numbers, open your phone’s system settings (found in the app drawer) and scroll down to About phone. Most phones display these numbers in this section, although you may need to open the Status section (under About Phone) to find them.
How to activate T-Mobile T-Satellite
If you’re already signed up for an eligible T-Mobile plan (as discussed in the section above) or have a separate T-Satellite-only SIM, you should be all set. It’s good to double check and make sure things are working before you head out, so follow these steps to make sure your T-Mobile T-Satellite is active:
1. Open your phone system settings. On most Android phones, this is found by tapping the settings icon in the app drawer.
2. open Network and Internet section (Connections on a Samsung phone).
3. choose SIM cards and mobile network.
4. hit Your SIM card in the list (not the toggle button to its right). On Galaxy phones, you can go directly Satellite networks and skip to the next step.
5. choose Satellite connection from the list.
If your phone does not support a satellite connection, you will not find Satellite Connection option in the menu.
The next screen will tell you if your phone is set up for a satellite connection. Mine on one of my T-Mobile plans Motorola Razr Fold indicates that the plan does not support satellite connection features.
On another T-Mobile plan that supports T-Satellite, the contact section shows that data and messaging are included in the account, as well as a list of all supported apps currently installed on the phone.
Now that you’re all set, enjoy enhanced satellite connectivity wherever you can see the sky. Remember that any obstacle, including trees, signs, and buildings, can block your connection.
For best results, go to a clear, open area and look for the special “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink” in your phone’s status bar to know you’re connected to T-Mobile.
