Threads users can now join group chats during live events

With the new Live Chat feature, Threads users can join public, real-time group chats built around big live events. Here are the details.

Topics announced Live Chats a feature that today looks like a cross between classic group chats and trending topics.

With Live Chats, users can jump into public group chats during live events like an NBA game and engage in real-time conversations with others watching.

Once you join a conversation, you can send messages, including photos, videos, and links, and tap reaction emojis to show how you feel back and forth. If the chat is full, you can still view the conversation, react to messages, and vote in polls.

For now, only a small group of creators and Community Champions can host Live Chats. But once they do, they become visible and accessible to the public, even after the session ends.

Here’s how eligible users can start a Live Chat, according to Meta:

Eligible hosts can schedule a Live Chat by tapping the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of their Community and selecting Schedule Live Chat. From there, you can name your chat, choose a start and end time, and invite people to join. You can also share your Live Chat in your Threads feed and Instagram Story.

Ongoing and upcoming live chats are listed above communities like NBA Threads. Once a user joins a chat, they can access it from the Messages tab just like any other one-on-one or group chat in the app.
