I recently wrote about myself The next step in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is the acquisition of a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas One. The thought process was that it was a decent but affordable step up from a regular controller with the finer control I was looking for.
It also has one feature I hadn’t thought of myself at this stage: A connector for external rudder pedals. Xbox and PC pilots are pretty well covered with equipment to take their virtual flights even further. But it seems that the public PS5 they are not so lucky.
I wasn’t actually aware of that – after all, we’re not really in the weeds of the PS5 ecosystem here, are we? – but PlayStation pilots don’t really have much to choose from. Apparently they don’t have external rudder pedals.
A review Microsoft flight simulator 2024 Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 5 for PS5. Daily simulation emphasized this fact. In the process, they also emphasized that this affordable piece of hardware is more important on PS5 than it is on Xbox and PC.
We do not review T. Flight Hotas 5 ourselves. Partly because it’s essentially the same hardware as the T.Flight Hotas One, and partly because we don’t have a PS5 right now. But the Xbox version has the same connector for the steering wheel pedals.
It just looks like an old phone jack, which you’ll be familiar with if you’ve ever used one. racing wheel and pedals on the console. On Xbox, we have a bit more choice; for example Turtle Beach has a set of pedals compatible with the console.
But I hadn’t thought of the lack of options out there for PS5 gamers. On the one hand, they have PlayStation VR2 support, something impossible Xbox Series X|S, but on the other hand, there isn’t much hardware to choose from if they want to push it a little further.
Hotas 5’s predecessor on PS4/PS5 probably has the same connector for the rudder pedals, but at this point it’s ancient and newer is better.
But it’s also a great example that you don’t always have to spend big to get the most bang for your buck. Sure, the selection may be limited, but at least there’s a way to get a little ahead on the PS5 until the market catches up. It’s not a bad flight stick either!
