When I first saw REPLACED, I was immediately impressed by the colors and overall design aesthetic that developer Sad Cat Studios had put in place. Although popular reach (that word will make sense later) I got caught up in the eyeball of Blade Runner fashion for some good 80s nostalgia.
This gritty cyberpunk feel mixed with a mind-bending replacement story is EARLY at the top of my list of recommendations for smaller titles.

You are Warren Marsh, a longtime scientist at the Phoenix Corporation. At the very least, you’re in the game’s launch, but not for much longer, as things quickly fall apart.
In moments, the tragic accident involved AI The REACH (Research Engine to Transform and Create Humans), created by Warren, ends up trapping Reach in Warren’s body. Realizing the situation, Reach takes the reins to find the nearest help, seemingly replacing Warren.
In a nightmare, Reach is forced to flee the facility and beyond the walls of Phoenix City, the Phoenix Corporation’s longtime bastion of humanity in the middle of the American wastes. After leaving, Reach continues to contact Warren, telling him that he will do everything he can to fix the situation and change back.
Along the way, you’ll uncover the terrifying secrets of the Phoenix Corporation and glimpse Warren’s memories as his connection to Reach’s body grows stronger. Will Reach find a way to fix the link and return Warren’s body to him?
You’ll also encounter help outside, giving a glimpse of civilized humanity beyond the megapolis. Tempest, a benefactor who helps those in need, quickly descends on you, fighting the enemies of the area and returning you to the city of humans not far away.
The art style really starts to open up as you enter the underground subway system to find a mix of eerily lit corridors and hostile puzzle sanctuaries.
I’m not one to appreciate pixel art styles in video games in general. Over time, the trend turned into an absurd number of games that the concept immediately became beyond me. There are few exceptions to this rule, but Replaced is now one of them.
Not only did it blow my long-held idea, but it turned out to be one of the best-looking games released in 2026. REPLACED is unparalleled in its appreciation of detail, lighting and color palette as it explores the ugly realities of humanity.
I found myself taking long breaks in the middle of my journey to admire the little touches of style around the world. The not-so-subtle absorption of light shining through a warehouse hallway, the flavor of roadside debris, it all adds up to something crazy I’ve never experienced from a Pixel-art style game before.
REPLACED is a 2.5D game, where most of its systems exist in a two-dimensional plane, and some mechanics allow you to move to the background or foreground of a level. The action feels heavy and meaningful as you explore the dangerous design of the world.
Whether you’re evading the police or hiding behind the moving, camouflaged cover of a sniper, REPLACED will keep you on your toes as you take on the daring task of survival. Even the environment will attempt assassination as you navigate through dilapidated structures to find your target or return to safety.
Combat is simple, but in the best way. You’ll feel right at home with REPLACED mechanics, with standard attack, dodge and parry to start. A heavy blow to the body or corpse of an enemy is healing in its delivery, satisfyingly interrupted only if you hit yourself.
In a style similar to the Batman Arkham games, Replaced moves from enemy to enemy with rhythmic timing. Breaking this rhythm does not bring disaster, but as long as you cannot restore this pace, you will definitely feel the atmosphere change in favor of the enemy.
In my time with REPLACED so far, I’ve found myself doubling up on battles so that I can replay without error. I wasn’t satisfied if I didn’t finish with minimal to zero blowouts to myself. Martial dance called me to perfection.
One of my favorite things came after a few chapters, when your character finally got access to your weapon’s shooting ability. Yeah, that sounds a little weird, but remember what I said at the beginning of this whole thing about the Reach finding a “broken” weapon.
This allowed me to finish some of the greatest pixel art with Blade Runner talent I’ve ever seen. My only complaint is that I wish there were more! With only a select number of finishers that Reach has to offer, I felt deprived of all that could have been!
After the first few hours of play, I didn’t even notice how time had passed. I was so excited to make a clip or look for the perfect screenshot to capture.
It was a beautiful thing to witness, and I witnessed it as the world unfolded before me in search of a potential answer or solution to Warren and REACH’s problems.
Did I find the answers? Yes, it’s for you to learn, but for only $20, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that REPLACED is absolutely worth the asking price and deserves to be picked up by fantasy fans everywhere.
