I, as I’m sure many others, wanted Valve’s Steam Machine to hit the market at a price that would shake up the legacy console space. but above $1,000 of course he won’t.
Admittedly, it’s not Valve’s fault that it doesn’t exist. Companies like Microsoft and others have contributed to what I can only describe as a total disaster of the memory industry.pushing prices to levels that analysts believe will never return to normal.
Honestly, we’re not here to talk about that. Instead, we’re here to discuss Steam Engine. Although Valve originally marketed it as a 4K60 gaming machine, the company has now quietly removed those claims from its product listing page and replaced them with a more modest promise “Up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1 thanks to discrete semi-customization AMD desktop-grade CPU and GPU.“
Previously, the page stated:
“4K gaming at 60 FPS with FSR thanks to a discrete, semi-dedicated AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU.“
I was actually quite impressed with Valve’s Steam Machine, but its 4K60fps The claims were certainly short-lived once reviewers got their hands on it. Admittedly, Valve has always announced that 4K60 will be available with FSR, so it’s not as if the company has committed the cardinal sin of false advertising, but rather they have significantly increased the truth.
Based on reviewers’ hands-on testing, Steam Machine seems to fall well short of consistently delivering the 4K60 target even with FSR enabled.
However, is it nice that Valve is mentioning FSR 4.1 which I believe is new? Don’t quote me on that. FSR4 is something I’ve been covering recentlymany people, myself included, were hoping that Valve’s reference to it in a back update would eventually carry over to devices like this. Steam deckit gives a little more life to its already aging equipment.
I won’t be buying a steamer, at least not until it’s worth the price, around $500. At this rate, it might not happen for another decade, and I’ll be pushing 40 by then, which is a slightly depressing thought.
But enough about me. What do you think about Valve quietly dismissing the 4K60 claim? Share your thoughts in the comments and don’t forget to take our poll!
