As part of all the layoffs falling on Xbox Game Studios developers this week 3200 “reset” abbreviation of Microsoft and Xbox and four studio divestments, hit ones DOOM developer id Software was the most shocking to many, given the popularity and success of the modern game trilogy.
It has been reported More than half of the ID has been removed from the XboxWith 136 developers – 96 at its headquarters in Texas and an additional 40 remote workers – leave the studio. The layoffs affected nearly every department at the developer, including building, maintaining, and improving the id Tech game engine used for various ZeniMax projects.
Individual DOOM developers have shared their reactions to the layoffsalthough id Software itself has yet to share a response to date. Now he has it with the studio shipment public statement on social media to calm fears about his future under Microsoft and Xbox.
“Thank you for all the support this week. While our studio has been affected, these changes have been spread across teams. We still have the crew we need to build the games and technology we’re known for,” id said in the letter. “The team today is roughly the same size as when we made DOOM (2016). We’ve always had a flat studio where everyone is creative, and we’ll stick to that philosophy going forward.”
“We are focused on supporting each other and impact team members. We will continue to create the great games and technology that have defined us for the past 35 years, and we look forward to seeing you at QuakeCon this August,” he added.
Interestingly, this statement confirms our last, previous report after the cuts, id Software is now close to the size it was when it released the 2016 DOOM reboot ten years ago, and the studio is not in danger of closing or being separated from Microsoft and Xbox.
It also confirms that the developer will still be moving forward with new games it looks like he won’t get a chance to explore some of his experimental ideas. Still, I expect we’ll see more DOOM titles from the team, and that the team will continue to iterate in favor of id Tech. Wolfenstein dev MachineGames and other studios.
Finally, it’s quite a relief to hear this news from id Software – to be clear, I’m not downplaying the severity of the outages when I say this. On the contrary, I’m glad that the developer still has a future in the wings of Xbox though how significantly the layoffs affected him.
The layoffs in Id represent a large portion of the roughly 440 total layoffs in all ZeniMax and Bethesdashot including other teams Bethesda Game Studios (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield) and ZeniMax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online).
Bethesda developers fear that The Elder Scrolls 6 will face crises and delays due to layoffs and a reduction in force at ZeniMax Online Studios Caused the “change” of the roadmaps for The Elder Scrolls Online. Bethesda’s official community, OneBGS, plans to protest the cuts next week With the “Save Our Giants” march.
