“We’re doing what it takes to bring fans back to Windows and Xbox”: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company is making major changes to fix Windows 11 and Xbox.
CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella commented on the company’s recent announcements regarding improvements to Windows and Xbox systems for customers. In it 3Q23 earnings callNadella commented on the company’s consumer businesses and was surprisingly candid about the work needed to fix both platforms.
“When it comes to our consumer business, we’re doing the groundwork required to bring fans back and strengthen the connection between Windows, Xbox, Bing and Edge.” Nadella said. “In the near term, we’re focusing on the basics, prioritizing quality and better serving our core users.”
“With Windows, we recently announced performance improvements for low-memory devices, simplified the Windows Update experience, and put the focus back on the core features and fundamentals that matter most to our customers. You’re seeing it on Xbox, too, where the team is reaching out to our core fans and gamers and shaping the future of gaming. Last week’s Game Pass changes are an example of how we’re responding to customer feedback.”

Nadella also announced the number of new active devices for Windows, confirming that Windows usage continues to grow: “Monthly active Windows devices have surpassed 1.6 billion, and over time Windows value will scale to deliver intelligence beyond measure.” He also confirmed that there are active Xbox users: “We set new records for monthly Xbox active users as well as game streaming hours in the quarter.”
Nadella’s comments come weeks after both the Windows and Xbox teams announced major changes to their platforms in direct response to user frustration over the past two years. Windows has confirmed plans to address serious pain points in Windows 11works to solve the platforms biggest problems and position the OS as a worthy competitor among macOS, steamOSand others.
The Xbox team said the same Working on “The Return of the Xbox” focusing on the console and reevaluating changes to Game Pass and exclusives to help position Xbox as a powerful consumer gaming platform once again. Both Windows and Xbox are working together to power the future of gaming on Microsoft platforms.
Nadella doesn’t often comment on what’s going on internally, but it’s clear that something is changing internally, allowing those teams to focus their efforts on what matters most — the customer. “Despite everything I’ve talked about, we’re also working hard to change the way we do business. Our North Star remains the same: delivering customer value with the highest quality and highest level of innovation.”

It’s great to see CEO Satya Nadella in this refocused Microsoft look for Windows and Xbox. Here’s hoping it can actually deliver on those promises, because if it does, both Windows and Xbox will once again be strong contenders in the tech space.
