Android AICore lets you “control generative AI features right on your Android phone or tablet’s hardware.” These models (Gemini Nano) is essentially huge, but Google now has a more detailed explanation as to why Android AICore’s memory is occasionally jumping.
AICore is available on Android 14 and higher for supported devices (processors). Google provides a list of which features and apps use the native model:
- Advanced proofreading: Improves grammar correction and language comprehension as you type.
- Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR): It converts streamed audio and audio files into text transcripts.
- Fraud detection: It identifies messages that may be considered spam or scams.
- Smart answer: Provides high-quality, context-aware reply suggestions in messaging apps. For example, it works on WhatsApp, Line and KakaoTalk via Gboard.
- Summary: It automatically creates a short summary of the recorded audio. For example, it works in the Recorder program.
- Translation: Easily translates text from one language to another.

More broadly, on-device AI is said to enable improved privacy, offline functionality and faster and more consistent performance:
- “Sensitive data stays on your device. It’s never sent to the cloud or Google.”
- “AI-powered features work even when you have no network connection or are in Airplane mode. This includes text summarization and smart replies.”
- “Local processing eliminates the delays associated with cloud-based services, providing a faster and more reliable experience.”
A Google support article now explains “Why Memory Usage Increases”. When a new version of the Gemini Nano is available, AICore “temporarily stores both old and new versions of the model for up to 3 days.”
It’s meant to “allow your phone to instantly roll back to an older version if a new update encounters an error, instead of downloading gigabytes of data again.”
When the system confirms that the update is stable, the extra memory space is automatically cleared.
