Repairability improvement costs
After seeing the title of this piece, I thought, “So, is the Surface Laptop 7 too repairable?” you may ask. You’d be right to think that the Surface Laptop 7 is easier to repair than its predecessors, but that’s far behind what Lenovo did with the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7.
iFixit called the original Surface Laptop a “glue-filled monster,” but things have improved since the 1st generation. Surface Laptop 7 is easy to open, has an easily replaceable battery, and supports easy access to an M.2 SSD for replacement.
The The Surface Laptop 7 received an 8/10 from iFixit for repair. While impressive, this rating is two points less than what the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 achieved.
Colon may sound small, but look what iFixit said on increasing repair ability by only one point (emphasis added):
“We are moving from a high score to a high result the highest the point is usually not to make small adjustments. It demands fighting over every small, boring, consequential decision— those who determine that repair is simply not possible or practical, but is readily available. We applaud Lenovo for going beyond “awesome” and continuing to improve and arm wrestling is subject to one repair point per tenth.“
Lenovo explained that it had to change its thinking during the design process to make the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 more repairable. The PC maker told iFixit that serviceability is usually optimized later in development, but Lenovo had to move it to an earlier stage.
iFixit has highlighted several aspects of the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 that can be repaired. A quick summary of how to assemble the Surface Laptop 7:

Why is this important for the surface?
Microsoft has either simplified or eliminated the Surface lineup, depending on your perspective. The days of illogical form factors seem to be behind us. Instead, Microsoft is focusing on its traditional clamshell laptop, the Surface Laptop, and the Surface Pro, which inspired the modern 2-in-1.
When a company produces laptops with unique hinges, detachable displays, and GPU-in-the-keyboards, people can let some things slide. The Surface Book 2 received a 1/10 from iFixit).
But given that Microsoft is only focusing on two form factors, the tech giant will have to miss out on those and meet the bar set by other OEMs.
Lenovo already has The surface has become what it should be in terms of unique hardware. Microsoft can’t afford to fall behind in more categories.
One of the main complaints about the Surface Laptop 7 is its battery life. Pictures of swollen batteries is very common on social media.
We saw it too Surface Laptop 7 is on the list of frequently returned items by Amazon last year, though the retailer did not provide specifics.
The r/sysadmin subreddit There is a thread full of people complaining about Surface Laptops, including the bloated batteries in those computers. It’s anecdotal, but the pattern is consistent: many administrators report fleets of Surface devices with battery expansion issues.
While it is possible to replace the Surface Laptop 7’s battery, it is easier to do so on the ThinkPad T14 Gen 7.
Active r/opinion boardthe ability to repair is not only appreciated, but part of the culture. People love how repairable and modular ThinkPads are. This is one of the many reasons why laptops have such a passionate and loyal following.
The subreddit is filled with posts praising Lenovo for finally reviving decades-old ThinkPads with new batteries or keyboards, users swapping out parts in minutes, and finally making USB-C ports modular after years of frustration with soldered connectors.
Microsoft needs to differentiate the Surface Laptop. To do this, he needs to build a Surface Laptop from scratch, with a focus on repairability.
