Microsoft’s June 2026 Patch Tuesday’s update quietly fixes one of Windows Search’s longest-standing annoyances. The search box now finds files with two characters less than the previous minimum of three characters. Files named Q3, V2, or any other short tag are no longer invisible.
The update also changes the order of the results. Local files now appear near the top instead of hidden beneath web results, app suggestions, and recommendations Copilot prompts. For anyone who names files with short, practical tags, the upgrade removes a little friction that gets complicated every time they search.
Windows Latest called the June release the biggest Patch Tuesday of the year. In addition to the search fix, it includes a record 200 security patches covering 33 critical vulnerabilities and three publicly released zero days.
Dropping a character from the search minimum sounds pointless. not. Most people who work with dozens of files on a daily basis use two-character naming conventions without even thinking about it. The old three-character floor meant that these files required a third keystroke before Windows would even begin searching, and when it did, the actual file often appeared beneath web links and AI suggestions that no one wanted.
A fix is the kind of usability improvement that’s only noticeable after shipping. Microsoft’s AI-first redesign dominated the company’s public messaging this year. But the most useful change it shipped in June wasn’t the AI feature. It allowed me to find a file named Q3.
