HPE’s new launch aims to get customers to think more deeply about migrating beyond VMware. Although there are numerous third parties requests have pointed to a a significant amount What VMware customers are looking for reduce or eliminate their use of VMware over the next few years, time and cost concerns is also expected to slow down or prevent migration plans, especially given that the migration may require paying for two virtualization products at the same time.
“One of the biggest things we’ve seen is that when customers go through this journey to change their operating model, you end up with double costs,” said Fidelma Russo, HPE’s EVP and CTO. Registration.
Dean Colpitts, CTO, Canadian managed service provider (MSP) Members IT Group (MITG) Suspended from VMware reseller program after a 19-year partnership a year ago, he doesn’t expect the promotion to boost sales much.
“All of our customers are working on three-, four-, or five-year lifecycles and generally make this purchase their initial purchase,” Ars said. “The biggest issue I see right now that is affecting VM Essentials sales and adoption (is) high DRAM prices and limitations affecting customers’ ability to get new hardware to migrate.”
Colpitts pointed to a lack of existing hardware for a permanent migration and “to facilitate a temporary brownfield re-imaging of a customer’s existing hardware from VMware to VM Essentials”.
On the other hand, one of HPE’s largest channel partners, San Diego-based Nth Generation, expects “the VM Essentials sales pipeline to quadruple and sales to grow at approximately that rate” due to HPE’s promotion. This was reported by CRN.
“These additional free licensing and migration capabilities will dramatically reduce the risk of migrating to VM Essentials,” Nth Generation co-president and CTO Dan Molina told the publication.

HPE also announced that by the end of the year, the HPE partner program will provide free three-year VM Essentials software licenses to 600 reseller partners who earn the Private Cloud with Virtualization competency. Partners still have to pay support costs.
Colpitts said the benefit was “a step in the right direction” but that limiting the promotion to 600 partners was “very short-sighted”. He believes that HPE should provide VM Essentials to all of its partners to “make it easier to get (VM Essentials) into customer sites and crowd out competitors.”
“They (VM Essentials) need to run as fast and as fast as possible to gain immediate traction and attract ISVs to them, which will further drive adoption,” he said.
